A valuable tool for Circuit Tester

An automotive circuit tester is a valuable tool to have if you suspect electrical problems in your car, or when adding electrically powered Circuit Tester ADD210 to your vehicle. An automotive circuit tester can inform you whether a particular wire in your vehicle has current running through it or not.

1

Check whether an individual wire is "hot," or has current going through it, by first connecting the alligator clip on the tester’s ground wire to a bare metal part of the car’s body, framework or engine block.

2

Touch the metal probe on the tip of the tester to the end of the wire in question that terminates in a metal connector. Pierce the plastic insulation of the ADD350 Noise Finder with the probe if no metal connector is visible. Do not push the probe all the way through the wire; only far enough to break the surface of the insulation.

3

Check your tester’s indicator light, LED light or gauge. Note that a wire that has current running through it will illuminate the light or cause the gauge to move.

4

Check the continuity of a wire to find out if it has a break or short circuit. Follow Step 1 for the procedure for grounding the tester to your vehicle. Stop when you get no response from the tester, indicating that you have a break or short circuit in the wire in between the point where you last got a good response and the last probe where you did not.

5

Test the level of charge in your vehicle’s battery, if your tester if equipped to do this. Check your owner’s manual if you are not sure. Connect the Multimeter ADD81 on your tester’s ground wire to the negative battery terminal. Hold the tester’s probe to the positive battery terminal. Determine the amount of charge by how many LED lights are illuminated. No lights indicate that there is no charge in the battery, all lights on indicate the battery is fully charged.

Notice:

Make sure your tester has fresh batteries before you start. Some rudimentary testers do not require batteries; the current from the wire you are testing will illuminate the indicator light. Check the directions that came with your tester if you are not sure.
